Day/Night 2 - The Journey Begins

So, day 2 of my time on this world had begun and it was time to set off on my possibly epic journey around the coastline. I had learned a few things from my first journey, and one of them was to be very careful when going outside early in the morning (and it is important to leave early to maximise travelling time). When the sun is still low in the sky there are often creatures of the night lingering nearby. I had a good look out of the windows and saw nothing, so I opened the door and stepped out. I looked left - no bad guys in sight. I looked right - and saw some bones and arrows. There had obviously been a skeleton out here last night and the sun had seen to him for me.
I ran over to pick them up, and then instinctively had a quick look around me. This was a good move. Coming down the side of the mountain right at me was the silent but deadly green creeper. I dived into the water and swam quickly over to the other side, glancing back to see where he was. Right behind me, of course.
Grabbing my sword, I confronted the beast and took a few swings at him before he could detonate. He went down in a final sparkly hit and left me a couple of lumps of gunpowder for my trouble.
There were no other nasties in the vicinity so I headed over to where a lone workbench marked the rough area of my starting point in this land. Here was where my voyage of coastal exploration would begin.

At this point I should mention some of the rules for my trek.

  • I will attempt to follow the coastline keeping the sea on my left and land on my right.
  • When the sea is bordered by cliffs I'm free to either swim along the side of the cliff, or to climb up and walk along the top.
  • Every so often I will place a cobblestone block beside the sea and place a torch on top. I do try to keep the next one within sight of the previous where possible so at any time if I get lost and find a random piece of coastline I'll know if I've been there before because one of my markers will be visible.
  • I will try to walk around the entire coast, not skipping parts like small bays or pieces of land jutting out into the sea.
  • Ice doesn't really count as land, so although I could walk across it I instead treat it as sea and follow the land.
  • A bridge over the sea (rare but in my experience they can occur) does count as part of the same piece of land.
I'm not yet sure what I'll do about rivers - they didn't exist the first time I did this. I suspect I'll treat them as coastline and follow them around, otherwise it could get confusing determining if a waterway is indeed a river.

Heading to the nearest bit of sea (or lake - I don't know if I'm on an island yet!) I placed my first block and I was off.
Very soon I caught a glimpse of another piece of land across the water. At this stage it's not somewhere I would have been, but later on at times like this I'll be looking for the tell-tale blocks with torches on to see if I'm looping back on myself. It looked like a very tree-lined shore and hopefully I will one day be walking along it.
I had started with 22 torches and was down to 9 when I discovered my first interesting feature - a pool of lava almost entirely surrounded by a border of stone. A chicken stopped and watched me as I took a photo of it.
I still hadn't looped around to my first night's cave stay, but I was getting near when I spotted this interesting looking mountain.
It was on a coastline on the other side of a piece of land, so would have to wait for later to be examined more closely - assuming that I would ever return this way. I turned away, walked along past a partially covered pond, the doorway to my overnight camp (at last!) and arrived at the waterfalls spilling down the side of the mountain. I could just dive in and swim across to the other side, but on this occasion I decided I'd tunnel through behind them, hugging the coast as much as possible. I climbed up and spotted a dark cave going into the rock in the opposite direction. Unable to resist a quick look, I ventured in.
It twisted around and dropped a few levels, but didn't go too far and was fortunately devoid of nasties. I did pick up a nice haul of coal, however, to craft myself a new batch of torches. I headed back over to the waterfalls. It was night already!
I stuck a quick wall in place, added a door and windows and settled down to some tasty cooked pork in my new comfortable home mere blocks away from my last one.

By the time I'd cooked up some mushroom stew and sorted out my belongings, the sun was coming up...
